HOW VOICE MAIL CAN TURN OFF PROSPECTS


Some people apparently do not think before they record voice mail messages.


We are talking about the message prospects and customers hear when they place a call to a business or a sales person.


Last week my next-door neighbor called a bank (one of the largest banks in the U.S.) to inquire about the rates for refinancing his home mortgage.


The person he called was not available, so he ended up listening to her voice mail message, which was surprising.


After listening, he hung up and did not call back.  Result?  One lost customer.  What happened?  What was wrong with the message?

THE WORDS SHE USED


What drove this customer away?

One phrase at the end of the message.

The first part of the voice mail message was the usual.
 
"This is Mary Jones and I am not able to take your call right now.  Leave your name and telephone number and . . . "

(This next phrase was the surprising part.)


" . . . I will call you back at my convenience."


     At MY convenience?

So . . .  when I get around to it?


She probably meant to say: " . . . at my earliest convenience."

She obviously did not listen to her message after she recorded it.

ONE OF THE BEST VOICE MAIL MESSAGES

The day before the Virginia primary (U.S. Presidential election primary) I received one of the best voice mail messages I have ever heard.

It wasn't just the WORDS the caller used.  It was the friendly tone of his voice that was impressive.

WHAT HE SAID

(In a cheerful, upbeat friendly voice.)

"Hello and good morning!  This is [his name] calling you on behalf of the [Presidential candidate's name] campaign.  Since tomorrow is primary day in Virginia, I wanted to remind you to go out and vote and when you do, I hope you will vote for [Presidential candidate's name].  Have a great day!"


I saved that message and played it several times.  He sounded like such a positive person!


And one other plus:  He did not sound like he was reading from a script; just talking from the heart.  Nice.
